How do you think the relationship between Grace and Neva changes as the story progresses?

As happens in a lot of families, a crisis of whatever kind, makes them count on and care about each other more and usually shrinks the pettier differences to insignificance. As most of us have learned when things get tough you can usually count on family to be there.

Their relationship could only change if each woman gave up some of her anger. What a lot of wasted energy it took to maintain their isolation. Grace finally had to recognize boundaries. She was the mother to avoid with her constant need to know and control everything. Neva had to be willing to open up to Grace, to Patrick, and to her baby.

That's a good point, RR! I can understand why Grace was angry, feeling like she'd missed out on something by not knowing her father, but not really sure what Neva would have been angry about. She obviously had a good education, was bright & successful, and certainly her mom had a lot to do with that. Any thoughts?
